Medical Schools in Ghana and Their Fees (2026): The Complete List

Where can you actually study medicine in Ghana, and what does it cost? Families weigh this decision every results season, and clear information is surprisingly hard to find. This guide lists every institution currently training MBChB doctors in Ghana, who awards each degree, and what is publicly known about costs.

The public medical schools

Ghana's public universities train the majority of the country's doctors: the University of Ghana Medical School in Accra (Korle Bu), the KNUST School of Medicine and Dentistry in Kumasi, the University of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences, the University for Development Studies School of Medicine in Tamale, and the University of Health and Allied Sciences School of Medicine in Ho. Public-school places are heavily subsidised for regular admissions — and correspondingly scarce: far more qualified applicants apply each year than there are seats, and many strong candidates are not placed. Fee-paying tracks at public schools cost substantially more than regular subsidised places.

The private medical schools

Ghana has a small number of private institutions approved to train doctors — among them Accra College of Medicine, Family Health Medical School in Teshie, and now the Klintaps School of Medical Sciences (KSMS) in Tema, which received Medical and Dental Council approval in 2026 and admits its first cohort in September 2026. Private medical schools charge closer to the real cost of medical training, and in return offer places that the public system cannot: smaller cohorts, and admissions decided on merit and interview rather than a placement lottery.

What KSMS costs — stated plainly

The Klintaps School of Medical Sciences publishes its fees openly: GHS 46,000 per semester for Ghanaian students and USD 4,000 per semester for international students, billed per semester rather than per year. For the founding cohort, an Early Bird Award of up to 50% off tuition is available for admissions completed by August 31, 2026 — decided case-by-case and confirmed in the admission letter. Student housing on the Tema campus runs from GHS 3,600 per semester, and qualifying Ghanaian students can access Students Loan Trust Fund support with instalment plans arranged through admissions.

How to choose

Three questions cut through the noise. Who awards the degree — a nationally recognised university matters for licensure and postgraduate training (KSMS degrees are awarded by the University of Cape Coast). Where will you train clinically — ask which hospitals, and how early you reach them. And what does the total six-year picture cost — including housing, not just tuition. Medicine is a long road; choose the institution that is clearest with you at the start.
