About This Programme

Malnutrition remains one of the most pressing public health challenges in Ghana. Nearly one in five children under five suffers from stunting, while micronutrient deficiencies affect millions of women and children across the country. At the same time, urbanisation and changing diets are driving a rise in obesity and diet-related diseases. Community nutritionists are essential to tackling this complex crisis at its roots. The BSc Community Nutrition programme at KCoHAS trains students to work at the intersection of nutrition science and public health, equipping them to design intervention programmes, conduct community-level nutritional assessments, and advocate for food security policies. Affiliated with the University of Cape Coast and aligned with AHPC standards, the programme emphasises fieldwork and community engagement from Year 2 onwards. Students work directly with district health directorates, community health posts, and NGOs delivering nutrition programmes in underserved areas. Graduates are prepared for careers with Ghana Health Service, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, World Food Programme, and international NGOs focused on nutrition and food security. The programme also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in public health nutrition, epidemiology, or global health. For students driven by the desire to create lasting, population-level health impact in Ghana and across Africa, community nutrition offers one of the most meaningful career paths in allied health.

Placements begin in Year 2 with observational visits and progress to hands-on programme delivery by Year 3. Students conduct growth monitoring and promotion activities, facilitate nutrition education sessions for mothers, assess community feeding practices, and contribute to data collection for national nutrition surveys. Final-year students complete a capstone community nutrition project addressing a real public health nutrition challenge in a specific community.

During my community placement in the Volta Region, I helped run a growth monitoring programme for under-fives. Seeing mothers understand for the first time how local foods could prevent malnutrition in their children, that was the moment I knew I had chosen the right career.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between community nutrition and clinical dietetics?

Community nutrition focuses on population-level nutrition challenges such as malnutrition, food insecurity, and public health nutrition programmes. Clinical dietetics focuses on individual patient care in hospital and clinical settings, developing therapeutic diets for specific medical conditions. Both programmes share a strong science foundation, but community nutrition is ideal for students interested in public health impact, while clinical dietetics suits those who prefer one-on-one patient care.

Can I work with international organisations like WHO or UNICEF?

Yes. Community nutrition graduates are well-positioned for roles with international organisations including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, World Food Programme (WFP), and international NGOs such as Action Against Hunger and Helen Keller International. These organisations actively recruit nutrition professionals for programmes across Ghana and West Africa.

Is fieldwork a major component of the programme?

Absolutely. Community nutrition is inherently field-based. Students begin community visits in Year 2, progress to supervised placements in Year 3, and complete a capstone community nutrition project in Year 4. You will work in real communities, health facilities, and NGO settings throughout the programme.

What are the career prospects for community nutritionists in Ghana?

Demand for community nutritionists in Ghana is growing steadily. The Ghana Health Service, district health directorates, and regional health authorities employ nutritionists across the country. Additionally, international organisations and NGOs running nutrition programmes in Ghana create further employment opportunities. Graduates can also pursue postgraduate study in public health nutrition or global health.
