Klintaps Receives Medical and Dental Council Approval to Launch MBChB Medical Degree

Klintaps University College of Health and Allied Sciences has received approval from the Medical and Dental Council of Ghana for its Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programme, clearing the way for the Klintaps School of Medical Sciences (KSMS) to admit its first cohort of medical students in September 2026.

The approval is the final regulatory milestone in a journey that already included programme accreditation by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (certificate GTEC/PAc/005810) and formal academic affiliation with the University of Cape Coast, whose Academic Board approved the affiliation in July 2024. Under the affiliation, examinations are moderated by University of Cape Coast academic staff and the MBChB degree is awarded by the University of Cape Coast.

With the approval, Klintaps becomes one of the few private institutions in Ghana training medical doctors — extending an institution that already runs 15 allied health programmes into a 16-programme health sciences university college spanning the full clinical team, from laboratory scientists and sonographers to, now, physicians.

A different kind of medical school

The six-year KSMS curriculum is an integrated, problem-based spiral: instead of studying anatomy, physiology and biochemistry as separate subjects, students learn the systems of the body as living wholes, revisited at increasing depth across the pre-clinical years. Community-Based Education and Service (COBES) begins in the second year, placing students in Ghanaian communities and district health systems long before they choose a specialty.

The foundation year signals the school's orientation to the future of the profession: alongside the core sciences, first-year students take Artificial Intelligence for Medical Practice, French for Health Professionals, Introductory Sign Language, and Health Law and Medical Ethics.

Clinical training runs through KSMS's partner network across Greater Accra and the Eastern Region — including Ga East Municipal Hospital, Tema General Hospital, Shai Osudoku District Hospital and Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital, with system-wide placements through a partnership with the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate — and high-fidelity simulation delivered through a formal partnership with the University of Health and Allied Sciences' Clinical Simulation Centre. The final year is a 36-week continuous clinical block, the longest unbroken hospital immersion of the programme.

Entry, fees and the first cohort

Entry to the MBChB requires the three core WASSCE subjects (Mathematics, English Language and Integrated Science) at C4 or better plus three science electives — and selection is extremely competitive, with the strongest applicants considerably exceeding the national minimum requirements. SSSCE, A-Level, international (IB, IGCSE, SAT I and II and other recognised examinations) and graduate-entry routes are also available, and all applicants attend a selection interview. Tuition is GHS 46,000 per semester for Ghanaian students and USD 4,000 per semester for international students, with instalment plans and Students Loan Trust Fund support available to qualifying Ghanaian students.

The school is led by its Dean, Dr. K. O. Antwi-Agyei, with sixteen academic departments headed by professors and senior specialists. Applications for the September 2026 first cohort are open now through the Klintaps admissions portal.
