About This Programme

Ghana's healthcare system is undergoing a digital transformation. From the rollout of electronic health records at district hospitals to mobile health platforms reaching rural communities, the demand for professionals who understand both healthcare and information technology has never been greater. The BSc Health Informatics programme at KCoHAS prepares students to lead this transformation. Affiliated with the University of Cape Coast, the programme covers health data management, electronic medical records, health information system design, biostatistics, epidemiological data analysis, and health IT project management. Students also study database design, programming fundamentals, and data security as applied to healthcare settings. Practical attachments at hospitals and health agencies give students hands-on experience with real health information systems. Graduates are equipped to work at the intersection of healthcare and technology — designing systems that improve patient outcomes, streamline hospital operations, and support evidence-based public health policy. With Ghana Health Service, the National Health Insurance Authority, and international health organisations all investing in digital health infrastructure, career prospects for health informatics graduates are strong and growing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this programme different from Computer Science?

Yes. While the programme includes IT fundamentals, it is specifically focused on healthcare applications. Students learn to design and manage health information systems, electronic medical records, and public health data platforms rather than general-purpose software development. The health sciences foundation makes graduates uniquely qualified for healthcare IT roles.

What software and systems will I learn to use?

Students gain experience with electronic medical record systems, hospital management information systems, health data analysis tools, database management platforms, and public health surveillance software used in Ghana's health facilities.

Can I work in both clinical and non-clinical settings?

Absolutely. Graduates can work in hospitals managing health information systems, at Ghana Health Service designing data platforms, in the private sector developing health IT solutions, or with international organisations supporting digital health initiatives across Africa.
