BSc Physician Assistant – Dental (Dental Therapy)

A highly skilled dental physician assistant is a vital member of the dental healthcare team. They practice in both rural and urban communities to deliver preventive and basic restorative care to children and adults. The dental physician assistant is trained in various dentistry techniques and also performs general office duties, including a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties under the supervision of a qualified dentist. The four-year BSc programme in Dental Physician Assistant studies at Klintaps College produces highly skilled healthcare professionals with thorough knowledge of various equipment, supplies, instruments, and techniques required for every dental procedure, and proper disinfection and sterilization techniques for infection control as well as giving instructions to patients on postoperative and general oral health care. We have state-of-the-art laboratory skills to equip students with the necessary skills needed to practice as dental physician assistants or dental therapists. The programme is affiliated with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Aim of the programme

The objectives of the programme are to train Dental Therapists who can:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the theoretical foundation of dentistry and how to apply acquired knowledge
  • Exhibit confidence in the management of patients and apply their clinical skills in the provision of excellent oral health care
  • Develop managerial skills related to self, others, and resources to enhance the quality of oral health service provision to patients/clients
  • Demonstrate and show compassion in the practice of their specialty and be willing to serve in rural communities to improve oral health services in such areas which are usually deprived of Dental Surgeons.
  • Provide care and show the ability to incorporate current trends in dental practice into their professional practice.
